    Summary Note:
[v.1.] In the U.S., HIV is rapidly becoming a disease of diversity. In this program, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Dr. Helene Gayle, and others address the demographic shift that shows the bulk of new infections occurring among women with low incomes and the black and Hispanic communities, while discussing medical advances that are lengthening patients' lives. In addition, case studies reveal the impact of HIV on people who live with the hope that a cure will soom be found-- before it is too late. [v.2.] Will an HIV vaccine be discovered anytime soon? Will new drugs be able to indefinitely suppress the virus for people already infected? And will aggressive AIDS awareness programs in schools and prisons wake up two of the largest at-risk populations to the very real dangers of infection? This program sheds light on these questions through interviews with Dr. Gary Nabel, director of the National Institutes of Health's Vaccine Research Center; Dr. Paul Volberding, director of the University of California's Center for "AIDS Research; Dr. Donald Francis, president of VaxGen; and others, as well as with patients doing their best to carry on with their lives.
